Director and producer Steven Spielberg has emphasized that the title role in his "Indiana Jones" franchise is
alwas going to be Harrison Ford's.
Ford first stepped into the shoes of intrepid archaeologist Dr. Indiana Jones for 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," reprising the role twice more throughout the decade.
More recently, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" arrived in 2008 to a mixed reception.
It was welcomed by a strong $786.6m box office, but failed to recapture the spirit of the originals in the eyes of many moviegoers.
That doesn't rule out the possibility of more entries to the Indiana Jones canon, especially not according to Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg.
"There are more [Indiana Jones] adventures out there than [Indiana Jones] films,"
Spielberg told Screen International for its December 4 issue.
"As long as there's more adventures out there, I've got a bullwhip, a fedora, a leather jacket and a man on a horse who knows how to get the job done," he said in reference to Dr. Jones' signature get-up.
Neither do his comments rule out a passing of the baton to a younger actor in a different role, in the same way that Shia LeBeouf had been introduced in "Crystal Skull" as Indiana's son.
Spielberg's most recent film "Bridge of Spies" is to be followed by an adaptation of Roald Dahl story "The BFG" and Ernest Cline novel "Ready Player One"; Ford co-stars is "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" from December 18, with Lucasfilm parent Disney also holding distribution rights to subsequent films in the "Indiana Jones" franchise.
